About Susan E.
Susan E. Williams built a legal career that began in the courthouse rather than the boardroom. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and completed her Juris Doctor at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. Those years set the course for work that has alternated between public prosecution and private defense.
Early in her career she served as a prosecutor at the Dorchester County Solicitor’s Office, handling domestic violence and other criminal matters. That prosecutorial experience gave her daily exposure to courtroom procedure and the pressures of jury trials. In 2010 she opened the Law Office of Susan E. Williams and shifted into private practice. She has represented clients in state courts and maintained admissions that allow appearances in the Federal Circuit and across South Carolina.
From 2011 through 2016 she accepted appointments as a Criminal Justice Act panel lawyer for the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Those appointments involved federal criminal defense work under the court’s appointment system. Before and after that period she kept up a steady presence in local legal circles, including active service in county bar associations and civic groups.
Her professional memberships reflect a mix of local and national involvement. She has been a member of the South Carolina Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2018. She served as president of the Dorchester County Bar Association for 2019–2020 and has belonged to the Dorchester County Bar Association since 2005. She also maintains ties to the Charleston County and Summerville legal communities and has participated in organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association.
On the technical side, Williams holds DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing certification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. She is also certified for a Concealed Weapons Permit through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Those credentials inform much of her practice, particularly in cases involving impaired driving and weapons offenses.
Outside the courtroom she has served on nonprofit boards and volunteered with state natural resources programs. Her civic activity has included involvement with the Francis Willis SPCA and local chambers of commerce.
She operates the Law Office of Susan E. Williams and handles criminal defense matters across state and federal venues. Her current practice centers on criminal defense, including DWI and weapons-related cases.
