About Chad D.
Chad D. Shelton earned a Bachelor of Arts from Valparaiso University in 2004, where he studied political science and business. He continued his legal education at Charleston School of Law and received his J.D. in 2007. Those formative years set the stage for a career in public service and private practice.
Fresh out of law school, Shelton joined the Berkeley County Public Defender’s Office in 2007 as an assistant public defender. He spent the early part of his career in that office. The role placed him in courtrooms and at clients’ sides during critical moments. It also gave him regular experience handling the pressures that come with criminal matters and courtroom work.
After nearly a decade practicing in the public sector and elsewhere, Shelton opened his own practice in 2016 under the name Chad D. Shelton, Lawyer At Law. He moved from working within a county office to managing the responsibilities of solo practice. Running a small firm required him to shift from a single role to many: lawyer, counselor, and the person who manages day-to-day operations.
Shelton maintains professional memberships and remains engaged in the legal community. He has kept active ties to peers and local institutions. That involvement has been part of how he stays current on developments affecting clients and court procedures.
Observers who have followed his career note a steady throughline: courtroom experience, client advocacy, and handling matters that require direct client contact. He built on the trial and negotiation work he did as a public defender and carried those skills into private practice. The result is a practice that blends courtroom experience with the individualized attention a small firm can offer.
In his office, Shelton counsels clients, prepares cases for court, and handles legal matters that come before state and local tribunals. He has operated Chad D. Shelton, Lawyer At Law since 2016 and continues to serve clients from that platform. His current practice centers on representing clients in state and local matters through his firm.
