About Stephen A.
Stephen A. Timoni built a foundation in accounting before he entered the law. He graduated from Wagner College with a B.S. in 1976, then earned his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1982. Those credentials underpin a career that crosses the boundary between tax practice and corporate counsel.
His earliest professional years were in public accounting. He began as an audit department senior at Deloitte & Touche in 1976. By 1982 he had moved into tax work as a tax department supervisor at PricewaterhouseCoopers. That background in audits and tax departments shaped an approach to legal issues that pays attention to numbers as well as statutes.
Timoni transitioned into private law practice in the mid-1990s. He served as a director at Gibbons P.C. beginning in 1995, then became a partner at K&L Gates LLP in 2000. In 2018 he joined Lindabury, McCormick, Estabrook & Cooper, P.C. as a partner. Across those roles he handled tax counseling, transactional tax matters, and tax controversy work for corporate and institutional clients.
He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and New York, and is also admitted in a range of federal fora, including the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States Tax Court. Professional affiliations run to both legal and financial circles: memberships include the American Bar Association, the New Jersey Bar Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Health Lawyers Association, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the Hotel Association of New York City. Those memberships reflect recurring work for clients in healthcare and hospitality as well as traditional tax practice clients.
Colleagues describe Timoni as someone who blends technical tax knowledge and practical business judgment. His experience in accounting firms and in law firms informs how he advises on audits, tax planning, restructuring, and disputes with taxing authorities. He has represented clients before federal courts and the Tax Court where litigation was necessary. He continues to practice at Lindabury, McCormick, Estabrook & Cooper, P.C., handling tax and related corporate matters for institutional clients and privately held businesses.
He currently focuses his practice on tax planning, tax controversy, and representation in federal and tax court proceedings.
