About Andres James

Andres James Ortiz built a career at the intersection of immigration law and public service. He began his academic journey studying education before turning to law, earning an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 2006 and a J.D. from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles in 2011. Those years shaped both his legal interests and his approach to clients.

During law school Ortiz gained practical courtroom and policy experience. He served as a Loyola Government Fellow at the Federal Public Defender in 2011 and worked as an extern to the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that same year. Earlier placements included an externship at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and a law clerk position at the National Immigration Law Center in 2010. In 2009 he was an Education Pioneers Fellow with the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF).

After law school Ortiz moved into private practice focused on immigration. In 2014 he joined Frangomen, Del Rey, Bernsen, & Loewy as an immigration lawyer. That role deepened his exposure to complex immigration matters across corporate and individual contexts. Three years later he opened his own firm. In 2017 he founded Andres Ortiz Law and began handling matters under his own banner.

Ortiz has maintained connections to professional organizations throughout his career. He is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and serves on the executive committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, where he holds the post of ICE Liaison. Those positions place him in regular contact with both practitioners and policy discussions affecting immigration litigation and advocacy in California.

Colleagues describe Ortiz as methodical and attentive to detail. He has experience in deportation defense, removal proceedings, family-based immigration petitions, and naturalization matters. His courtroom background from the Federal Public Defender’s office and his appellate exposure while clerking in the Ninth Circuit inform how he prepares cases and argues motions.

Clients who come to Ortiz Law can expect an attorney who draws on both public and private sector experience. He works on matters that range from administrative filings before immigration authorities to representation in immigration courts. He also engages in case strategy that takes account of policy shifts and procedural developments.

He currently represents individuals and families in immigration matters, including deportation defense, family-based petitions, and naturalization.
