About Zachary

Zachary Smith studied history and Spanish before turning to the law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky University and later took his legal degree at Belmont University College of Law. Those years shaped how he reads facts and how he listens to people. They also gave him tools he still uses in court and at the negotiating table.

He joined Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers in 2021 as an associate. Since then he has practiced across state lines. He is admitted to the bars of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, and he works on cases that arise in those jurisdictions. The move into plaintiff-side injury work followed a steady progression from law school clinics and early litigation assignments into a practice that centers on handling claims for people injured in crashes and other accidents.

Smith’s academic background in history helps when a case depends on reconstructing events from disparate sources. His study of Spanish adds another dimension to client interviews and case preparation. He approaches written evidence and witness accounts in the same methodical way he would approach a historical document. That tendency shows in how he prepares deposition outlines and trial exhibits. He emphasizes clarity in pleadings and precision in the factual record.

At Hughes & Coleman his responsibilities have ranged from drafting pleadings and discovery requests to preparing clients for depositions and trial. He has worked on multi-party automobile crash files and on individual injury claims. In court he has handled motion practice and participated in hearings. In settlement talks he has taken part in demand strategy and mediation sessions.

Colleagues describe him as someone who prefers work over words. He is methodical in building a legal theory and persistent in following up on medical and investigatory leads. The office environment at Hughes & Coleman places him alongside lawyers who litigate personal injury matters across several offices, which has broadened the kinds of cases he encounters and the procedural issues he manages.

Outside of casework he remains connected to professional networks in the region. Those memberships keep him current on developments in personal injury law and civil procedure. He continues to develop courtroom skills and to handle files across Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.

He currently practices as an attorney at Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers, representing people in personal injury matters across the states where he is licensed.
