About W. Whitfield

W. Whitfield Hyman earned a B.A. in economics from the University of Central Arkansas before returning to Fayetteville for his J.D. at the University of Arkansas. The combination of economic study and legal training shaped a practical approach to litigation and policy work. He took the path into courtroom practice after law school rather than pursuing a purely academic route.

Early in his career Hyman served as a law clerk in the Arkansas 4th Judicial District Drug Court in 2012. That year gave him sustained exposure to the interplay between criminal adjudication, treatment programs and sentencing alternatives. The clerkship placed him in regular contact with judges, probation officers and treatment providers, and it involved legal research, drafting court documents and helping manage complex dockets.

Hyman's professional memberships reflect the strands of his practice. He holds membership in the Arkansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Arkansas Bar Association. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and serves on the NORML Legislative Council. Since 2010 he has been affiliated with the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy. These associations point to interests that span criminal defense, drug policy and broader public policy debates.

Over the years Hyman has worked inside the state court system and in private practice settings. He has maintained an office presence in Fayetteville and at a main office serving clients elsewhere in Arkansas. His work has required frequent appearances in state court and engagement with the local legal community. He has balanced courtroom work with client counseling, attempting to translate legal options into practical choices for those he represents.

Colleagues describe Hyman as someone who combines courtroom experience with an awareness of policy questions that affect criminal law. He reads legislative developments and advocacy positions closely, particularly on issues related to drug policy and criminal procedure. That attention to public policy informs how he evaluates plea offers, diversion possibilities and post-conviction remedies.

His practice is based in Arkansas and centers on criminal defense, drug-related matters and public policy issues affecting clients in state courts.
