About Matthew
Matthew Benson trained first as a scientist and later as a lawyer. He earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Arkansas — Fayetteville and completed his J.D. at the University of Arkansas School of Law in 2011. Those academic roots inform the methodical approach he brings to casework today.
His early legal work began in federal court. In 2014 he served as a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Arkansas, where he handled research, drafting and preparation for federal prosecutions. The following year he moved into county-level prosecution, joining the Benton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as a deputy prosecutor. That role placed him in court frequently and exposed him to a broad range of criminal matters.
Also in 2015 he worked at The Law Group of Northwest Arkansas and joined professional organizations including the State Bar of Arkansas and the Washington County Bar Association. Over time his career encompassed both sides of the courtroom. He later appeared at wh Law | We Help in 2019, a period that broadened his practice experience outside government service.
Benson maintains memberships in several local and state bar associations. He is a current member of the State Bar of Arkansas, the Washington County Bar Association and the Arkansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those affiliations reflect ongoing ties to the legal community and to colleagues who practice in trial and criminal defense settings.
His courtroom background combines prosecutorial experience and defense-oriented memberships. The clerkship gave him experience in federal procedure and litigation preparation, while his time as a deputy prosecutor provided firsthand exposure to trial work, motion practice and plea negotiations. Later roles in private practice added client counsel and case management responsibilities.
Colleagues describe his work style as methodical and direct. He tends to break complex problems into discrete issues and address them step by step. That approach acquires particular value in criminal matters where factual detail and procedural precision matter.
He is currently based at Hogue Law Office. There he handles criminal defense matters and litigation arising from his years in both public and private practice. His current practice centers on criminal defense and related court representation.
