About Thomas Whitfield Dunaway

Thomas Whitfield Dunaway IV built his path to law from two South Carolina classrooms. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and communications from Clemson University in 2005. He returned to the state for his legal training, receiving a J.D. from Charleston School of Law in 2010.

Early in his career he took a prosecutorial route. In 2013 he served as an Assistant Solicitor in the Tenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. That role placed him in court on a regular basis. It provided hands-on experience with trial procedure, evidence and courtroom advocacy.

After law school and his time in the solicitor’s office, he gained admission to practice in 2015. He is licensed in South Carolina and holds admission to the Federal Circuit. Those credentials allow him to handle matters in both state trial courts and in certain federal appellate proceedings.

His professional affiliations include active memberships tied to his licensure and practice. He has maintained those connections since his admission and continues to participate in the bar environment that governs practice in the state. The mix of trial experience and appellate eligibility shapes the kinds of matters he accepts and the courts where he appears.

Courtroom work and appellate filings have both been part of his professional life. The prosecutor’s office work gave him frequent exposure to trial-level litigation, while his Federal Circuit admission allows him to engage in federal appellate work when cases meet the jurisdictional requirements. He has handled case preparation, brief writing and oral argument in settings that demand careful attention to procedural and substantive rules.

Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who prefers preparation over improvisation. He approaches hearings and filings methodically. He pays attention to the record and the sequence of steps that lead to either trial or an appellate briefing schedule.

Today he continues to practice law in South Carolina. He appears in state courts and is authorized to appear in proceedings before the Federal Circuit. He works from an office as a lawyer, advising clients and representing them in court when required.

He currently concentrates on litigation and appellate matters in South Carolina and in the Federal Circuit.
