About Steven
Steven Hernandez built his legal foundation at Rutgers University–Camden, earning a B.S. in Business Administration in 1998 before returning to Rutgers School of Law–Camden for his J.D., which he received in 2004. He entered practice immediately after law school and began work as an associate in two New Jersey law offices the same year. Those early roles put him in courtrooms and municipal calendars across the state. He learned the routines of municipal practice and the mechanics of criminal defense one docket at a time.
In 2004 Hernandez worked as an associate at the Law Office of Robert L. Tarver, Jr., and at The Law Offices of John J. Novak, Esq. Three years later he opened his own firm. In 2007 he became CEO and Chief DWI/DUI Lawyer at The Hernandez Law Office, P.C. Running a small firm required him to switch frequently between client work, courtroom advocacy, and the administrative duties of a practice owner. He has maintained that role for years.
Hernandez is admitted to practice before the New Jersey courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Much of his professional training centers on impaired driving cases. He holds certifications as an SFST Instructor and as a Certified Alcotest Operator (Draeger). He has a DRE Overview Certificate, a Certificate in Forensic Sobriety Assessment, and coursework in forensic chromatography and solid drug dose analysis. Those technical credentials inform how he examines evidence in DWI and DUI defense matters.
He is board certified in DUI defense by the National College for DUI Defense. He also carries the Municipal Court Trial Lawyer credential from the Supreme Court of New Jersey. His continuing legal education credits include instruction on field sobriety testing, defending DWI blood cases, and municipal court practice. He has presented and attended numerous CLE programs that deal directly with the forensic and procedural issues that arise in impaired driving prosecutions.
Professional associations have been a steady part of Hernandez’s career. He has been a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey Bar Association and the Ocean County Bar Association since 2004. He has held leadership roles in the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Municipal Court Practice Section, serving as chair in 2016–2017, vice chair beginning in 2012, and senior legislative coordinator in 2011–2012. He maintains membership in the National College of DUI Defense and other specialized groups.
Hernandez’s practice remains concentrated on DWI and DUI defense in New Jersey courts. He manages trial preparation, evidence review, and municipal court representation through The Hernandez Law Office, P.C., and continues to handle cases that involve breath testing, blood and drug evidence, and the procedural questions that arise in impaired driving matters. His current practice focuses on representing clients in DUI and DWI cases in New Jersey.
