About Steven Carl
Steven Carl Townsend earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2002. He entered the bar after law school and later obtained a certification in civil litigation from the same institution. Those credentials have shaped a career spent largely in litigation and appellate work.
Townsend moved quickly into firm leadership. In 2004 he served as a managing partner at Eddy Townsend Gravina & Bendik. In that role he handled administrative duties and case strategy while overseeing other lawyers. The managing partner post came early in his career and set the tone for work that combines courtroom practice with firm management.
He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Third and Seventh Circuits. That mix of state and federal admissions allows him to take cases through trial and into the appellate process. His certification in civil litigation complements his court admissions and reflects formal training in courtroom procedure and advocacy.
Townsend’s professional life extends beyond law offices and courtrooms. He has served on local and regional boards, including the Riverside Center for Innovation since 2015 and PCTV’s board of directors since 2017. He also holds memberships in several bar groups and professional organizations. Those include the Pennsylvania Bar Association (since 2010), the Allegheny County Bar Association (since 2002), the Federal Bar Association (since 2002) and PIOGA (since 2012).
Colleagues see Townsend as a lawyer who balances litigation demands with organizational responsibilities. He has worked on matters that require both trial-level preparation and appellate briefing. He has also been involved in governance through his board roles, where legal training often intersects with nonprofit oversight.
Townsend’s experience is rooted in traditional civil litigation practice. He has courtroom experience and handles procedural work at the appellate level. He has continued to engage with professional groups in Pennsylvania’s legal community while serving on boards outside the bar.
He currently maintains a civil litigation practice and handles matters in Pennsylvania and before the Third and Seventh U.S. Courts of Appeals.
