About Steve
Steve Suneson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. He entered practice after law school and moved into a combination of public and private sector roles that shaped his early career. His legal education provided a base for courtroom work and firm practice alike.
He began his professional career in New York City as an associate at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP (formerly Dewey Ballantine LLP) in 2000. Two years later he shifted to public service and served as a prosecutor in the Queens District Attorney's Office. That prosecutorial post gave him direct trial experience and exposure to the mechanics of criminal litigation. In 2004 he returned to private practice as an associate at Kavinoky Cook LLP and became a partner there in 2008. Several years later he joined Coan, Payton & Payne, LLC as a partner in 2015. In 2020 he took on a shareholder role at Jones & Keller, P.C., a position he holds today.
Suneson is admitted to practice in Colorado and New York. His professional recognitions include an Avvo rating of 10.0 out of 10 and an AV Preeminent 4.9 out of 5.0 rating from LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell. Those ratings reflect peer and client evaluations collected by third-party services and are listed among his professional credentials. Over more than two decades of practice he has worked on matters arising in both state and federal contexts, drawing on experience from prosecution and firm-based litigation roles.
At Jones & Keller, P.C. he serves as a shareholder and continues work that spans his prior roles in prosecution and private practice. His career path shows steady transitions from associate to partner and then to a leadership role at a firm. He practices in the jurisdictions of Colorado and New York and maintains an active role in firm matters in those jurisdictions.
