About Stephen
Stephen Sweatt built a practical path to law from the sciences. He earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Southern Maine in 2015 and then completed a J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law in 2016, where he took courses in criminal law and family law.
He moved into practice in Maine after law school. Sweatt holds membership in the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and practices through Zerillo Law Office, LLC. His training in criminal and family law at law school informs the work he does for clients today.
Sweatt represents people facing criminal charges across Maine courts. He also handles matters that arise in family law, including custody and support issues. His membership in the state criminal defense association keeps him connected to developments in criminal practice and to colleagues who handle similar caseloads.
In the courtroom and at the negotiating table he tends to take a direct approach. He prepares for hearings and trials and also pursues resolutions when they serve a client’s interests. That can mean defending clients against serious charges, arguing evidence issues at suppression hearings, or negotiating terms in family-law matters. He emphasizes clear communication about legal options and likely outcomes.
Colleagues describe him as practical and steady under pressure. Clients see him as straightforward about risks and realistic about what can be achieved in a given case. Outside court, his background in biology gives him a different angle on fact patterns and evidence, a perspective that can be helpful when cases involve technical or scientific issues.
He practices from Zerillo Law Office, LLC, and handles criminal defense and family-law matters in Maine state courts. His current practice focuses on criminal defense and family law in Maine.
