About Stephen C.
Stephen C. Hanemann trained as a lawyer in New Orleans after undergraduate study in Austin and a spell in France. He earned a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, studied at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, and received his J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2002. Those formative years combined a mix of regional and international study that surfaces in the range of matters he handles today.
He began practicing the same year he finished law school. His first role was at Lemle & Kelleher, LLP, where he worked on litigation matters and gained early courtroom experience. Four years later he joined Kean Miller LLP and became a partner in 2006. The shift marked a move into a larger firm environment and a broader slate of client work across business and public sector matters.
Hanemann is admitted to practice in Louisiana and in several federal venues. His authorizations include the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana. He appears regularly in both state and federal forums and handles cases that proceed through motion practice, trial, and post-judgment proceedings.
He has supplemented his trial and appellate credentials with formal mediation training. He completed civil, commercial and employment mediation training through The Mediation Institute. He also holds an International Trade Certificate from the World Trade Center New Orleans, which informs work involving cross-border transactions and regulatory concerns. Those certifications expand the options he offers clients beyond courtroom litigation.
Hanemann maintains memberships in several bar and professional groups. He belongs to the Louisiana State Bar, the New Orleans Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Judge John C. Boutall Inn of Court, an organization that emphasizes ethical practice and mentoring among lawyers and judges. These affiliations provide regular contact with peers and opportunities for continuing legal education.
Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who balances courtroom readiness with alternative dispute resolution tools. He has experience taking matters through trial and settlement processes, and he brings that practical orientation to client counseling. He remains based at Kean Miller LLP and practices across state and federal matters while handling mediations and international trade-related work as part of his current practice focus.
