About Sarah Van

Sarah Van Voorhis earned her J.D. from Stanford Law School in 2001 and began building a practice in California that centers on family law and related matters. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Utah in 1997. Those academic steps set a clear path toward courtroom work and client counseling in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Van Voorhis is a founding partner of Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP. She helped create the firm to handle contested family law cases and advising clients on complex financial and parenting issues. Over the years she has guided clients through divorce proceedings, custody disputes and support negotiations. Her work combines trial preparation, settlement advocacy and courtroom appearances when cases proceed to hearings.

Her involvement in professional organizations runs broad. She holds current memberships in the American Bar Association and the California State Bar. Locally she belongs to the San Francisco Bar Association’s Barristers Club and to Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF). Since 2014 she has served on the Family Law Advisory Commission, a role that has kept her engaged in the development of state and local family law practice standards. Earlier in her career she served on the board of the Stanford Club of San Francisco from 2009 to 2010.

Colleagues describe Van Voorhis as pragmatic in litigation and attentive in client meetings. She manages the practical details of case strategy while preparing for the possibility of trial. She is frequently involved in motion practice, contested hearings and negotiated settlements. Her courtroom work is complemented by efforts to shape policy and practice through the advisory commission and bar association activities.

Clients encounter a lawyer who expects thorough preparation. She arrives at hearings with documentary evidence assembled and witness plans in place. She also spends time on alternative dispute resolution when cases can be resolved without a full trial. That mix of approaches reflects the varied demands of family law in a busy jurisdiction like California.

Van Voorhis continues to lead Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP. She remains active in bar and community groups and in the Family Law Advisory Commission. She currently concentrates her practice on family law matters at Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP.
