About Susan
Susan Urrutia trained on the West Coast and east of the Capital Beltway. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland at College Park and later received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. Her path through two distinct academic environments gave her both a broad liberal arts foundation and a professional legal education anchored in Northern California.
Her legal career brought her into private practice in California where she rose to the role of senior associate at Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP. Colleagues describe her as methodical in court filings and precise in drafting, traits that helped her take on increased responsibility. She has developed the practical day-to-day skills that law firms rely on: counseling clients, preparing pleadings, and supporting trial preparation when matters move toward litigation.
Professional involvement has been a steady part of her work life. She maintains an active membership in the State Bar of California and belongs to both the Santa Clara County Bar Association and the San Mateo County Bar Association. Those memberships reflect regular engagement with the local legal community and access to continuing education and regional networks.
At Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP she holds the title of senior associate. In that capacity she manages caseloads, coordinates with other attorneys, and assists in case strategy and client communication. Her role requires balancing legal research, document management, and direct client contact. Over time she has taken on projects that demand attention to detail and an ability to synthesize complex information for clients and supervising partners.
Her academic background at Santa Clara University School of Law informs her approach to problem-solving. The law school’s emphasis on practical skills and ethical practice is evident in how she approaches file management and client counseling. The liberal arts training from the University of Maryland contributed to a rounded perspective that she brings to legal questions.
Outside of casework, she participates in local bar association activities that support professional development and peer collaboration. Those associations provide forums for staying current on changes in California law and for exchanging practical tips with fellow practitioners.
She is currently licensed in California and practices law at Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP. Her present work centers on representing clients through the stages of legal representation at the firm.
