About Ryan
Ryan Sandrock built an academic foundation in social studies before turning to law. He earned an A.B. in Social Studies from Harvard University and completed his J.D. at The University of Chicago Law School in 2000. The combination of a liberal arts undergraduate education and rigorous legal training shaped an early interest in litigation and public policy.
He began his professional life outside traditional law practice, teaching American history and civics and coaching cross-country and track at the Episcopal School of Acadiana in 1997. That early stint in education preceded a shift into law that led to roles at major firms and in government. By 2013 he was a partner handling antitrust and class action litigation at Sidley Austin LLP. He later served at the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division’s Digital Markets unit, a role that placed him on teams addressing competition issues raised by technology platforms.
In 2019 Sandrock taught antitrust and intellectual property as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He moved into a leadership role in private practice in 2022 as a partner and Co-Chair of the Antitrust Practice at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. Along the way he has gained trial and appellate experience and appeared in a number of federal fora.
His practice centers on antitrust and class action litigation. He is admitted in California and Illinois and is a member of the trial bar for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He is also admitted in the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of California, and has appellate admissions that include the Ninth, Eleventh and Second Circuits. Those credentials support work on merger litigation, antitrust disputes involving digital markets and complex civil litigation in federal court.
Sandrock has taken leadership roles in professional organizations. He serves on the Litigation Section’s Antitrust Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association and chairs the Merger Litigation Subcommittee. He is active in the California Lawyers Association, where he has served on the executive committee and contributed as a treatise editor and event organizer. He has maintained membership in the Illinois State Bar since the early 2000s.
He currently practices antitrust and class-action litigation at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P., concentrating on civil antitrust matters and cases in federal courts.
