About Robert J
Robert J Foley built his legal foundation at Iowa State University, where he completed a B.S. in History in 2004 and added a minor in Psychology. He went on to earn his J.D. from Hamline University School of Law in 2009. Those years shaped a methodical approach to evidence and an interest in how people make decisions under pressure.
He began his post-law school career in Minnesota courts and took a managerial role early. In 2010 he served as managing lawyer at Gerald Miller, P.A., a position that put him in the thick of client intake, case strategy and courtroom work. Six years later he helped launch Kinsella and Foley Defense, becoming a co-owner in 2016. That move shifted him from employee to firm partner and expanded his responsibilities to include running a practice as well as handling cases.
Foley is admitted in Minnesota and to the Federal Circuit. His memberships reflect a steady engagement with criminal defense and trial practice. He belongs to the Amdahl Inn of Court (since 2018), the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Hennepin County Bar Association (both since 2016), the National College for DUI Defense and the National Academy of Criminal Defense Lawyers (since 2016), and the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also holds membership in the National Trial Lawyers.
His courtroom experience includes state and federal matters. He handles trial preparation, plea negotiations and hearings. DUI defense appears regularly in his caseload, reflecting his membership in organizations that focus on impaired-driving defense. He also handles contested criminal matters that require briefing and argument in court. Colleagues describe him as straightforward in the courtroom and deliberate in preparing cases, preferring careful attention to procedure and evidence over flash.
At Kinsella and Foley Defense Foley manages clients, delegates work to staff and continues to maintain an active docket. He balances administrative duties with direct client contact and court appearances. He keeps current through professional groups and trial practice events. He currently concentrates on criminal defense, including DUI and federal matters.
