About Richard W.

Richard W. Morefield built a steady legal career from classroom to courtroom. He earned a B.A. in economics from Rice University and went on to law school at the University of Kansas School of Law, where he completed his legal education. Those academic years set the tone for a practice rooted in litigation and trial work.

After law school he moved into practice in the Midwest. Over the years he has appeared in state courts in Missouri and Kansas and has secured admission to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. His courtroom experience spans trial and appellate proceedings, and he has been involved in matters that required both bench and jury appearances.

Morefield has been active in bar associations, particularly those tied to trial and insurance law. His service in the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section included a multi-year stint as an editor of The Brief, the section’s quarterly law magazine, from 2010 through 2017. He also served as Chair-Elect of the Trial Techniques Committee for the 2016–2017 term, a role that involved organizing program content and engaging other practitioners on trial practice issues. Those positions placed him in regular contact with litigators from across the country and kept him engaged in contemporary trial strategy and procedure.

Colleagues describe him as experienced at handling litigation logistics and courtroom preparation. He has worked on cases that required careful evidence management and practical trial planning. Over time he developed particular familiarity with issues that commonly arise in tort and insurance disputes, including coverage questions and contested liability claims. He approaches complex files by breaking them into discrete tasks and preparing each element for adversarial testing.

He practices from an office at Morefield Speicher Bachman, LC. There he handles cases that range from routine defense matters to more contested civil litigation. His practice includes both trial representation and appellate briefing when cases move beyond the trial court. He also contributes to the professional community through committee work and legal writing.

In recent years he has balanced courtroom appearances with mentoring younger lawyers at his firm and contributing to continuing legal education programs. He remains admitted to practice in Missouri and Kansas and before the Tenth Circuit. He currently practices at Morefield Speicher Bachman, LC, handling tort and insurance litigation and related appellate work.
