About Paul Timothy
Paul Timothy Dietz brought an uncommon combination of scientific training and legal practice to his work as a patent lawyer. He earned a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Saint Olaf College in 1983. That foundation in technical subjects has shaped his career path ever since.
He began practicing patent law in 1993 and has built a practice in Minnesota. Early in his career he moved from classroom and lab concepts into the intricacies of patent prosecution and counseling. He learned to translate technical ideas into patent claims that are precise enough to withstand scrutiny but broad enough to be useful.
Over the years Dietz has focused on patent matters that require a grasp of complex technology. His background in physics and math makes it easier for him to engage with inventors, understand technical disclosures, and explain details to patent examiners. He spends much of his time drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, and advising clients on protection strategies for inventions.
Dietz practices through DietzLaw Office LLC. He has handled matters for individuals and small businesses, often advising on how to protect early-stage innovations and how to position intellectual property as part of a business plan. He works in an area of practice where technical accuracy matters as much as legal analysis, and he brings both sides to bear when preparing filings and arguments.
Colleagues describe his work as methodical. He approaches each file as a technical problem to be documented and then described in legal terms. That approach can ease the process for inventors who are comfortable with equations and experimental data but less familiar with legal drafting. He is comfortable discussing detailed technical subject matter and converting technical concepts into patent specifications and claims.
Dietz remains based in Minnesota and continues to practice patent law. He maintains ties to the technical community through his educational background and applies that perspective to everyday patent work. He currently practices patent prosecution and related intellectual property counseling through DietzLaw Office LLC.
