Matthew D. Brown is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 2005. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Brown is a partner at Cooley LLP, a law firm located in San Francisco, California. He has been practicing law for over 20 years, serving clients throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Mr. Brown earned his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1998. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at Cornell University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1992. During his time at Harvard, he was involved in various legal clinics and externships, gaining practical experience in commercial litigation and intellectual property law.
Mr. Brown concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, class action litigation, cyber/data/privacy, intellectual property litigation, and white collar defense & investigations. He represents clients in a wide array of cases in state and federal courts across the country, as well as in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including pretrial, trial, and appeal.
Throughout his career, Mr. Brown has handled cases in the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, and Central Districts of California, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He has also appeared before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First and Ninth Circuits and the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to joining Cooley LLP, he worked as an associate at a mid-size litigation firm in San Francisco for five years.
Mr. Brown is an active member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of California. He holds membership in the American Bar Association Section of Litigation. He is also a certified mediator through the California State Bar's Alternative Dispute Resolution program. Mr. Brown is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing him to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
