About Joshua
Joshua Weiss followed an unconventional path into courtroom work. He earned a B.A. from the University of Georgia in 2003, studying political science, Latin and classical culture. He then completed a J.D. at the University of New Hampshire School of Law in 2008, where his coursework emphasized litigation and intellectual property.
He opened The Law Office of Joshua Weiss in 2011. That move established him as a trial practitioner working on a range of criminal matters. In 2017 he joined Cavett, Abbott & Weiss, PLLC as a member, adding a firm affiliation to his solo practice experience. His career has alternated between solo practice and collaborative firm work, the latter giving him access to shared resources for complex cases.
Weiss is admitted to practice in both Tennessee and Georgia. He holds memberships in the State Bar of Georgia and the Tennessee State Bar. He has been listed as a member of the American Bar Association since 2012. Those affiliations sit alongside several criminal defense organizations he belongs to: the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is also active in local and trial groups, including the Chattanooga Bar Association and the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association.
His educational background in litigation and intellectual property remains part of the professional picture, even as most of his public affiliations are tied to criminal defense and trial practice. He frequently appears in court and has worked on cases that require motion practice, evidentiary hearings and jury trials. Colleagues describe him as someone who moves between courtroom advocacy and case preparation rather than staying strictly behind the desk.
Outside the courtroom his memberships suggest an interest in professional standards and peer engagement. He has been listed in multiple bar rosters since the early 2010s and continues to participate in bar and trial lawyer associations. That network feeds into how he staffs cases and seeks resources for clients.
As of 2026 he maintains an active practice that handles criminal defense matters across Tennessee and Georgia and practices through his association with Cavett, Abbott & Weiss, PLLC as well as his own office.
