About Joshua E.
Joshua E. Bushman studied political science and economics at Hampden-Sydney College before earning his J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law. He took a conventional path through law school and into early roles that exposed him to the workings of high courts. In 2007 he served as a part-time clerk in the Clerk’s Office of the United States Supreme Court, a position that offered him a close look at appellate procedure and court administration.
That same year he became a managing member of Bushman Law Group. The office grew around litigation and courtroom work, and he has maintained a leadership role there since. Over time his practice widened to include appearances in state and federal forums. He is licensed to practice in Virginia and admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and in the District of Columbia.
Collegial involvement has been a steady part of his career. He maintains memberships in VEALA, VACDL and VAELA. These associations reflect how he engages with peers and stays connected to developments in law and practice. He also contributes time to firm management and client work rather than to public-facing scholarship or high-profile litigation noted in national media.
Peers describe him as methodical in the courtroom and attentive to procedural detail. He has handled matters that required both trial preparation and appellate briefing. The Supreme Court clerkship early in his career continues to inform how he approaches appellate filings and court filings at every level.
Outside the courtroom he has focused on building a local practice supported by a small team. The firm’s docket includes contested matters in state courts and filings in federal district and appellate courts. He balances casework with supervisory duties at the firm and with ongoing bar and association activity.
His trajectory is one of steady practice development rather than frequent moves between firms or public office. He remains based at Bushman Law Group and continues to accept matters that require litigation in Virginia and federal courts. His current practice centers on litigation in Virginia and federal courts.
