About Joshua A.

Joshua A. Newville built a legal career that began in Minnesota classrooms and moved quickly into complex litigation and dispute resolution. He earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities in 2005 and completed his J.D. at the University of Minnesota Law School in 2009. Those years anchored an interest in public law and institutional accountability that would shape his work.

He began practicing at Madia Law LLC, first as a law clerk in 2010 and then as an associate in 2012. He became a partner at Madia Newville LLC in 2018, handling a mix of employment and civil litigation matters. In 2017 he served as a volunteer ethics investigator for the 4th District Ethics Committee of the Minnesota Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board, an experience that put him inside the systems that govern lawyer conduct.

In 2021 Newville returned to the University of Minnesota Law School as an adjunct professor. He has also worked as a volunteer mediator for the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. Those roles reflect his interest in dispute resolution and legal education. He holds Rule 114 Qualified Neutral status in Minnesota, a credential that authorizes him to conduct court-ordered mediations and arbitral processes.

His practice broadened beyond traditional litigation in the early 2020s. In 2022 he launched Trembling Leaf Media, an investigative podcasting project that examined workplace issues and public-interest stories. The following year he operated Newville PLC, offering mediation and investigative services. In 2024 he stepped into a leadership role as Employment Litigation Group Leader at Halunen Law, joining a firm known for its employment docket. He continues to combine courtroom work, mediated settlements, and independent investigations in his professional mix.

Newville is admitted in Minnesota and Wisconsin and has litigation experience in the federal appellate circuits listed for the 8th and the 9th Circuits. He participates in professional organizations that include the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Public Justice Foundation, the Federal Bar Association, the National LGBT Bar Association, and regional bar groups such as the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association. These memberships reflect the range of his practice and professional interests.

Peers and colleagues describe him as practical in court and methodical in investigations. He has balanced academic work, volunteer service, media projects, and firm leadership across his career. He currently practices employment litigation and mediation.
