About John R.
John R. McGuire combines scientific training and legal study to shape a practice centered on tax law. He began his academic path at Indiana University–Bloomington, where he earned a B.A. in 1996 with majors in biology, psychology and history. He went on to the University of Denver for law school, completing his J.D. in 2004 and later returning for an LL.M. in Taxation, awarded in 2012.
McGuire moved into private practice after law school and took on increasing responsibility quickly. By 2007 he was serving as managing partner of McGuire Law Office. That role placed him at the center of day-to-day firm management as well as client work. Over time he developed credentials that extend beyond the state bar; he is licensed by the Colorado State Supreme Court and admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court.
His background in science informs a methodical approach to complex tax questions. Cases and client matters that implicate technical details, numbers and regulatory interpretation are where his training proves useful. He handles matters that require attention to procedural nuance and to the substantive rules that govern federal and state taxation. He is comfortable in agency forums and in court settings that require detailed record review and precise legal argument.
Colleagues describe McGuire as someone who prefers clear analysis over flourish. He tends to break problems into discrete parts, address each in turn, and produce written work that reflects that structure. That style suits tax litigation and advisory work, where the interplay of statute, regulation and administrative guidance often determines outcomes. He also oversees firm operations, pairing administrative decisions with the legal work produced by his office.
Outside of specific casework, McGuire has maintained a practice that sits at the intersection of transactional tax planning and dispute resolution. He represents individuals and businesses in matters that arise under Colorado law and in proceedings before the United States Tax Court. His clients range from small business owners to taxpayers facing audit-related disputes.
He continues to lead McGuire Law Office and to handle a caseload centered on tax-related matters in Colorado and before the United States Tax Court. His current practice focuses on tax controversy, representation in tax proceedings and related advisory work.
