About John E.

John E. Clancy took a steady path into New Jersey’s family law community. He earned a B.A. in political science and philosophy from Rutgers University in 1999 and returned to Rutgers for his J.D., completed in 2006. Those years in New Jersey shaped his early legal interests and set the stage for a career centered on matrimonial matters and dispute resolution.

He began his legal career in the state courts. In 2006 he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Amy O’Connor, J.S.C., at the Superior Court of New Jersey in Warren County. The clerkship offered a front-row view of family and civil litigation, and it provided a grounding in courtroom procedure and judicial decision-making that would inform his later work.

After the clerkship, Clancy entered private practice. He joined Daggett, Kraemer, Eliades, Kovach & Ursin as an associate in 2007. A year later he moved to Townsend, Tomaio & Newmark, L.L.C., becoming a partner in 2008. The progression from associate to partner in a short span reflects a rapid assumption of case responsibility and client work. His practice has remained anchored in New Jersey state matters.

Clancy holds professional certifications that align with his caseload. He is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Lawyer, a designation that recognizes training and experience in family law. He is also approved by the Superior Court of New Jersey as a mediator pursuant to R. 1:40-12, which permits him to handle court-referred and private mediation in contested family matters. Those credentials allow him to approach disputes from both advocacy and settlement perspectives.

He has been a member of the Morris County Bar Association since 2008. That local affiliation keeps him connected to county-level practice patterns and courtroom peers. Over the years his caseload has included divorce proceedings, equitable distribution, child custody and support issues, and other matrimonial concerns common to New Jersey practice.

Colleagues describe him as practical in the courtroom and procedural in preparing cases, preferring clear case plans over grand strategies. He balances contested litigation with alternative dispute resolution using his mediator approval to explore negotiated outcomes when appropriate. Clancy remains based at Townsend, Tomaio & Newmark, L.L.C., where his current practice centers on matrimonial law and mediation in New Jersey.
