About John D.
John D. Metcalf earned a B.S. in accounting from the University of Houston–Clear Lake and later took up legal studies at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he received his J.D. His background in numbers and statutes came together over the course of a career that spans more than two decades.
After law school, Metcalf moved into private practice and spent the bulk of his career at McLin Burnsed. He joined the firm in 2004 and served as a partner there until 2021. Those years included a steady diet of courtroom work, client counseling, and transactional matters. Colleagues describe him as methodical. Clients saw someone who could parse complex financial records and turn them into clear argument.
Metcalf is admitted to practice in both Texas and Florida. He has handled matters that required cross-jurisdictional attention and has represented clients in state courts. His accounting training has influenced how he approaches disputes that involve financial evidence, regulatory detail, or business records. He tends to break problems into discrete parts and then address each one in sequence.
In 2021 Metcalf joined Dowd Law Office P.A. as a lawyer, counselor and litigator. The move brought him into a smaller firm environment, where he could combine litigation and advisory work for businesses and individuals. At Dowd, he continued to handle contested matters while advising clients on risk, compliance and dispute avoidance. He is comfortable in the courtroom and in the conference room.
Metcalf’s practice habits reflect the two sides of his training: attention to numeric detail and familiarity with legal procedure. He prepares exhibits, works through deposition strategy, and drafts pleadings with an eye to how financial documents will read to judges and juries. His prior partnership role included supervising junior lawyers and managing client relationships, experience he has carried into his current work.
Outside of case files, Metcalf’s career track shows a steady progression from accounting student to trial lawyer. He has worked in both larger firm and smaller office settings. He is now based at Dowd Law Office P.A., where his current practice concentrates on litigation and client counseling.
