About John Crafton
John Crafton Cornett built his legal foundation in Kentucky classrooms and courtrooms. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Transylvania University in 1996 and completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2001. Those years framed an interest in courtroom work and public service that has informed his career ever since.
Cornett began his early practice working in a private firm environment as a staff lawyer at The Morgan Law Office. He then moved into public defense, serving as a staff lawyer and public defender with the Department of Public Advocacy. That period gave him repeated hands-on experience handling trials, client interviews and courtroom strategy. It also exposed him to the pressures of managing cases where stakes are high and resources are limited.
After years in both private and public settings, Cornett opened his own practice. He is the owner and managing lawyer of The Cornett Law Office, PSC. Running a small firm has meant combining casework with the administrative tasks of managing a practice. He oversees case intake, client communication and the day-to-day decisions that shape how the office operates.
His admissions include the Kentucky bar and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Those credentials allow him to represent clients at the state level and to pursue matters that reach the appellate level in the federal circuit. Throughout his career he has handled trial-level criminal defense matters and related post-conviction work, an area he first encountered in the public defender’s office and continued to address in private practice.
Cornett is active in the professional community. He holds membership in the Kentucky Bar Association and the Fayette County Bar Association. He participates in local bar activities and attends CLE offerings that reflect developments in criminal law and trial procedure. Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who prefers clear, direct communication and steady preparation over rhetoric.
Outside the courtroom he has balanced casework with the responsibilities of firm management. The Cornett Law Office, PSC serves clients who require representation in criminal matters and appellate proceedings arising from those cases. He maintains his practice in Kentucky and continues to take cases that call for trial experience and appellate work in the Sixth Circuit.
Cornett currently practices law through The Cornett Law Office, PSC and handles criminal defense and appellate matters in Kentucky and the Sixth Circuit.
