About John Chung-Chuen
John Chung-Chuen Tang is a partner at Jones Day, a global law firm, specializing in securities litigation and SEC enforcement matters. He has been practicing law for over 25 years, representing companies, directors, and executive officers in shareholder litigation, SEC enforcement actions, and internal investigations. His expertise also extends to advising clients on corporate governance, D&O insurance, and Rule 10b5-1 trading plans. Mr. Tang's practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Mr. Tang earned his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School in 1996, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and participated in the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at Yale University, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1991. During his time at Yale, he was a member of The Whiffenpoofs, an a cappella singing group.
Throughout his career, Mr. Tang has handled cases in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Francisco, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has also appeared before the New York State Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Before joining Jones Day in 2012, he was a partner at Latham & Watkins LLP from 2005 to 2012 and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edward N. Cahn, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, from 1997 to 1998.
Mr. Tang is an active member of the California State Bar and the New York State Bar. He has been recognized by Super Lawyers from 2015 to 2019 and 2021 to 2026. In addition to his legal practice, he serves as an adjunct professor at the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco, teaching securities litigation. He has also been a panelist on various securities litigation and enforcement topics and served on the editorial advisory board of Law360 Securities from 2014 through 2023. Mr. Tang is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, enabling him to effectively serve a diverse clientele.
