About Joe

Joe Lewis followed an unconventional path to the law. He earned a B.A. in History and Political Science from Fordham University in 1982 and returned to formal legal study decades later, receiving his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law in 2008. That span between degrees gives the timeline of his professional life a different rhythm than many of his peers.

After finishing law school, Lewis moved quickly into private practice. In 2011 he founded Port City Legal, LLC and remains the owner. The firm is the center of his professional activity. He has been a member of the Maine State Bar Association since 2011 and practices under Maine jurisdiction.

Clients and colleagues describe his approach as straightforward. He favors clear explanations over legalese and practical solutions over theoretical ones. That orientation shows in how he runs a small practice: he handles cases directly, keeps communication channels open, and focuses on resolving immediate issues for clients rather than layering on complexity.

His experience bridges different phases of a long working life. The years between his undergraduate degree and his law degree are reflected in a measured professional style. He is comfortable advising individuals and small organizations on matters that arise in state practice, and he applies classroom training from the University of Maine School of Law to everyday legal problems faced by people in his community.

Within the Maine legal community Lewis maintains steady ties. His ongoing membership in the Maine State Bar Association keeps him connected to developments in state law and to the network of practitioners across the state. He does not appear to hold public leadership titles, but he is a regular participant in the bar’s activities and professional offerings.

At Port City Legal, LLC he manages the firm’s operation while taking on client work. The practice is structured to provide direct attorney access and continuity for clients through the lifecycle of their matters. Lewis emphasizes timely responses and plainspoken counsel, aiming to reduce uncertainty for clients during legal processes.

He continues to practice law in Maine through Port City Legal, LLC, where he serves local clients and manages the firm’s work in the state.
