About Jeff
Jeff Gutkin earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Brandeis University in 1995. He went on to receive a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2000. Those formative years gave him a foundation in legal analysis and argument that would shape his later work in federal courts.
After law school, Gutkin built a practice that brought him into a broad swath of federal jurisdictions. He is admitted to practice in California and holds admissions in several federal courts, including the U.S. District Courts for the Central and Northern Districts of California, the District of Colorado, the Northern District of Georgia, and the Eastern District of California. He is also admitted to practice before the 1st and 9th U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal. His courtroom experience reflects persistent engagement with the procedural and substantive demands of federal litigation.
Gutkin is a partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. At the firm he has handled matters that require coordination across trial and appellate forums. Colleagues describe his approach as methodical; he sets out legal arguments in plain terms and is used to moving them through layered federal rules and schedules. Over time he has developed a practice that often intersects with multi-jurisdictional issues and disputes that land in both trial courts and circuit courts.
His caseload has called for work on motions, discovery disputes, and appellate briefs. He appears in district courts and courts of appeal, handling litigation that can range from technical procedural fights to matters that involve substantial factual records. Rather than specializing narrowly, Gutkin’s record shows a steady course through diverse federal dockets, which has required fluency in both local rules and circuit-level precedent.
Outside the courtroom he has been involved in firm matters and the development of case strategy. He also maintains professional connections that support cross-jurisdictional work. His background combines an Ivy League undergraduate education in political science with a Michigan law degree and two decades of practice in federal forums.
He currently practices civil litigation in federal and state courts, handling commercial disputes and regulatory matters across multiple jurisdictions.
