About Janet
Janet Amburgey built a career in family law from steady steps rather than sudden leaps. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2002. Six years later she earned her Juris Doctor from Appalachian School of Law, graduating in 2008.
Her earliest legal work came while still in school. In 2007 she served as a law clerk at Hart Law Office. After law school she joined Messer Law Office as an associate lawyer in 2008. Four years into practice she moved into a partnership role, becoming a partner at Gum, Hillier & McCroskey, P.A. in 2012. The firm later became Gum, Hillier, McCroskey & Amburgey, PA., reflecting her long-term place in the firm.
Amburgey is licensed to practice in North Carolina. She holds certification from the North Carolina State Bar as a Certified Family Specialist, a credential that signals additional training and testing in family law matters. Her credentials align with the types of cases she handles and the clients she represents.
She has remained active in local and state bar organizations for much of her career. She has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association since 2008 and joined the Family Law Section in 2013. At the district level she has belonged to the 28th Judicial District Bar since 2008 and later took on leadership roles there. She served as Executive Committee Secretary for the 28th Judicial District Bar from 2018 to 2020 and has been on the Executive Committee since 2017. Since 2017 she has also co-chaired the Parents’ Rights Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association Family Law Section.
Colleagues describe Amburgey as methodical in court preparation and direct in client communications. She favors clear organization and steady advocacy in contested matters. Her background in business and marketing informs how she manages case logistics and client expectations.
Today she practices at Gum, Hillier, McCroskey & Amburgey, PA., where she handles family law cases that include custody, child support, equitable distribution, and related domestic matters. Her practice centers on representing individuals in family court and advising on parental rights and responsibilities.
