About James Charles

James Charles Egan built his path to the law through a mix of classroom study and courtroom work. He earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Canisius College in 2003 and also pursued coursework at William & Mary. Those early choices set a clear line toward public service and legal practice.

He entered public prosecution early in his career. In 2007 he joined the Monroe County District Lawyer s Office as an assistant district lawyer. The job put him in regular contact with police, victims, defense counsel and judges. He handled case preparation, court appearances and the day-to-day demands of a busy county office. That experience shaped his view of how the criminal justice system operates on the ground.

Later he moved into legal education. In 2015 he served as an adjunct professor at SUNY Brockport College. There he taught courses that drew on his courtroom experience and his academic background. Students recall a classroom that combined practical examples with statutory and case-law analysis. Teaching gave him a different vantage point on the law and on how young professionals prepare for practice.

In 2018 he founded James Egan Law. He has led the firm since then. Ownership brought new responsibilities: client development, case management and running a small legal business. He shifted from being one of many in a public office to directing a practice where decisions are his to make.

He has also maintained professional association membership since 2007. That ongoing connection has kept him plugged into local legal developments and peer networks. It is part of how he stays current on changes in procedure and statute that affect trial work.

Over the years his work has stayed rooted in New York practice. He has handled matters that come into county-level criminal courts and has taught students who move into the state bar. He speaks plainly about courtroom realities and the tradeoffs that often arise in prosecutions and defense work.

Today he practices through James Egan Law in New York. His current practice focuses on matters arising in New York’s criminal justice system.
