About James A.
James A. Cooper earned a J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 2016 after completing undergraduate work at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, where he received a B.A. in 2011 with a major in criminal justice and a minor in English literature. He combined classroom study with practical training during law school and left with a steady interest in commercial law and bankruptcy practice.
Early in his career Cooper served in the Army National Guard and held the rank of First Lieutenant in 2007. That military service preceded his entrance to law school and informed his approach to client service and case management. He joined the Virginia State Bar in 2016 and has maintained bar memberships since then.
After law school Cooper began his legal practice at Shenandoah Legal Group, P.C., in 2016. He moved into practice at JC Law, PLLC in 2019, where he continues to work. His responsibilities have included representation of creditors in state and federal matters, handling litigation tied to collections, and participating in bankruptcy proceedings on behalf of clients. He is comfortable in both contested hearings and negotiated resolutions.
Cooper is admitted to practice in Virginia and West Virginia. He is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia. He holds memberships in a range of professional organizations, including the Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Franklin County Bar Association, the Virginia Creditors Bar Association, and the Commercial Law League of America. His law office carries membership in the National Creditors’ Bar Association.
Those memberships reflect the kinds of matters he handles day to day: creditor representation, collection litigation, and bankruptcy-related disputes. He has developed courtroom experience in both state and federal forums and continues to appear in proceedings before bankruptcy judges and district court judges in the Western District of Virginia.
Clients and colleagues describe him as practical and methodical; he tends to favor clear case plans and measured litigation strategies. He balances courtroom work with transactional and administrative tasks that creditors often require. He remains based at JC Law, PLLC, where he handles creditors’ rights matters and related litigation.
