About Herman Austin Watson
Herman Austin Watson IV trained across several legal traditions before opening his own practice. He earned a J.D. from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco in 2012 after study that included a year abroad at Leiden Universiteit in 2011, where he focused on international law and international criminal law. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from Lewis & Clark College, conferred in 2007, and later attended Mercer University’s Trial Practice Institute in 2016 to sharpen courtroom skills.
Watson was admitted to the California bar in 2014 and began working at Watson Law Office, P.C. in 2015. His membership in the California State Bar dates to 2014. He also holds membership in the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a connection that began in 2016 and continues. The dual ties to California and Montana are reflected in the jurisdictions where he is licensed to practice law.
Early training overseas and a philosophical undergraduate background inform his methodical approach to casework. The Leiden coursework exposed him to comparative criminal systems and international statutes. The Trial Practice Institute at Mercer introduced practical trial exercises and evidence handling techniques that he later applied in state courts. Watson has a certification in DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a credential that supports work on impaired driving cases.
His practice spans criminal matters with an emphasis on cases that involve driving under the influence. He represents clients at arraignments, hearings, and trial. His courtroom preparation draws on the trial exercises he completed at Mercer and on practical investigation of field sobriety procedures. Memberships in professional organizations keep him connected to peers in criminal defense on both sides of the Rocky Mountains.
Colleagues describe Watson as attentive to procedural detail and willing to test evidentiary claims in court. He has developed practice routines that prioritize early case assessment and timely motions. That approach guides interactions with prosecutors, lab analysts, and expert witnesses when such work is necessary.
He maintains an office under the name Watson Law Office, P.C., and continues to work in California and Montana. His current practice centers on criminal defense work, including representation in DUI cases and related matters.
