About Gilbert L.

Gilbert L. Carey brings together formal legal training, military study and an accounting background. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Northeastern University in 1993, a J.D. from Albany Law School in 2001, and later completed a program in Military Art and Science at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 2017. Those pieces of education shape the work he does now.

Carey began his professional career in tax before he began practicing law. In 1998 he worked as a tax consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers. After law school he served as a law clerk to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York in 2001. He taught at Albany Law School as an adjunct professor of law in 2002, bringing classroom instruction and courtroom exposure into the same year.

He is a licensed certified public accountant in Massachusetts and Virginia and holds a Certified Tax Representation Consultant credential. Memberships in professional organizations go back decades. He has been affiliated with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants since 1998 and has been a member of the Georgia State Bar since 2019. He also maintains involvement in the American Bar Association’s Tax Section and the Hampton Roads Estate Planning Council.

Over the last decade Carey has taken on roles that blend practice, governance and teaching. He joined Fusco & Carey, PLLC in 2012. In 2014 he served as an adjunct professor at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School. He served on the Virginia State Bar’s Trusts and Estates Section Board of Governors from 2022 to 2023 and holds a seat on the Virginia Bar Trusts and Estates Section Board of Governors. In 2024 he began a board role with the Virginia Society of CPAs, Tidewater Chapter.

In 2024 Carey became counsel at McDowell Law Group, PLLC. He is admitted to practice in Virginia, New York, Georgia, Massachusetts and before the United States Tax Court. His combined background in accounting and law informs work on tax controversy, estate planning, trusts and related litigation. He continues to teach and mentor while maintaining a practice that blends tax law, fiduciary matters and courtroom work.

He practices as counsel at McDowell Law Group, PLLC, where his current practice concentrates on tax, trusts and estates, and related litigation.
