About Emily S.

Emily S. Yu earned a B.A. in psychology from Columbia University in 2007 and a J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 2011. She joined the Georgia bar the same year and has maintained active membership since. The academic path gave her a mix of social science insight and legal training that she has carried into practice.

Her early legal career began at Hunter, Weinstein & Somerstein, L.L.C., where she worked as an associate starting in 2012. That position offered hands-on experience in litigation and client work. Four years later she launched Yu Family Law and began handling matters under her own firm name in 2016.

Yu concentrates her work in family law. She is a certified mediator through the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution, a credential that allows her to conduct court-referred and private mediations. The mediator certification complements the litigation aspects of family practice by providing an alternative path for resolving disputes outside the courtroom.

Since 2011 she has held memberships in the American Bar Association, the Atlanta Bar Association and the Georgia State Bar. Those memberships reflect steady professional involvement and access to continuing legal education and peer resources. They also mark her long-standing presence in the Georgia legal community.

Her day-to-day practice involves client counseling, negotiation and court appearances in family courts. Cases commonly involve divorce, child custody and related financial issues. As a practitioner she balances advocacy in contested matters with efforts to reach negotiated solutions when possible. Mediation skills and courtroom experience inform that balance.

Colleagues and opposing counsel see her as pragmatic in hearings and persistent in litigation. She is represented through the firm name Yu Family Law, which she established to provide direct client representation. The office handles intake, case strategy and dispute resolution under that banner.

Now based in Georgia, she continues to serve clients through Yu Family Law. Her current practice centers on family law and mediation.
