About Elaine L.

Elaine L. Thompson earned her J.D. from Florida State University College of Law in 1989. She moved from law school into a career that blended courtroom practice and bar governance. Her training at FSU provided the foundation for long involvement in matters that shape the legal profession.

Early in her professional life, Thompson took on roles that extended beyond client representation. She chaired the Student Education and Admissions to the Bar Committee of The Florida Bar from 1993 to 1994. A few years later she served on The Florida Board of Bar Examiners from 1999 to 2004. Those positions placed her at the intersection of legal education and licensure, where policy and procedure affect every aspiring lawyer.

Her service continued into the next decade. Thompson chaired The Florida Bar’s Continuing Legal Education Committee during 2018 and 2019. That role involved oversight of programs that lawyers use to keep skills current and to meet ethical and procedural obligations. Her committee work reflects an interest in how organized bar activity supports an effective justice system.

Thompson’s admissions reinforce a practice that spans trial courts and appellate forums. She is admitted to practice in Florida and Georgia, and to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Her credentials also include admission to the 11th Circuit and to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as the District of Columbia. Those credentials suggest steady appellate and federal litigation engagement over the course of her career.

She remains active in several professional associations. Her memberships include The Florida Bar and the State Bar of Georgia, as well as bar organizations centering on the Black legal community: the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association, the George Edgecomb Bar Association and the Fred G. Minnis Bar Association. The combination of statewide and community-focused associations shows a professional life that values both formal bar governance and local legal networks.

Thompson’s career reads as a mix of practice and institutional work. She has balanced courtroom admissions with committee leadership, contributing to how lawyers are trained and regulated. She continues to maintain her bar memberships and appellate admissions and to engage in activities related to legal education and admissions to the bar. Her current practice focuses on matters related to her admitted jurisdictions and ongoing involvement in bar-related education and admissions work.
