About Douglas R
Douglas R Griess earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2000 after completing a B.A. in political science and economics at Virginia Tech in 1994. Those years of study framed an interest in how law and policy intersect. The law degree followed a stretch working in legal support, giving him early courtroom exposure before he entered practice.
He began his legal career as a paralegal in 1998 and moved into associate roles after law school. In 2003 he joined Baldwin & Carpenter, PC as an associate lawyer. Four years later he took an associate position at Dymond Reagor Colville, LLP. In 2010 he launched The Griess Law Office, LLC, practicing under his own firm name for several years. In 2016 he became a partner at Hackstaff Snow Atkinson & Griess, LLC, where he continues his practice.
Griess is admitted to practice in Colorado and Wyoming and is also admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Those credentials have enabled him to handle matters in both state and federal forums. Outside of firm work he has been active in legal and civic organizations for many years. He is a member of the Colorado and Denver bar associations and joined the Wyoming Bar Association in 2018. He has held memberships in the Federalist Society since 2011 and the Christian Legal Society since 2004. From 2003 until 2016 he maintained membership in the American Bar Association, and he is listed as an allied lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom since 2012. His volunteer work includes regular service at the Denver Rescue Mission legal aid clinic, a role he has filled since 2005. He also served on the board of directors for Highline Community Church from 2008 to 2012.
Colleagues describe Griess as methodical in his preparation and steady at the courthouse. He has moved between solo practice and firm environments, then into a partnership role, and those shifts have shaped how he manages cases and client relationships. He works from the offices of Hackstaff Snow Atkinson & Griess, LLC and represents clients in trials and appeals in state and federal courts. His current practice involves litigation in state and federal courts.
