About Doug
Doug Passon trained first as a scientist of sorts. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Indiana University in 1992 and then turned to law, receiving his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1996. The combination of a technical undergraduate degree and a law degree shaped a methodical approach to problem solving that surfaces in his courtroom preparation and advisory work.
Passon began his career after law school and built experience across courtroom and advisory roles. Over the years he has taken on research, brief writing and trial-related responsibilities that are common to defense practice. He is a current member of the State Bar of Arizona and has practiced in that jurisdiction. His path brought him to the Barone Defense Firm, where he now serves as Of Counsel.
His work tends to emphasize the practical tasks that underpin litigation and defense work. He writes and edits pleadings, reviews evidence, manages discovery, and prepares witnesses for testimony. He also spends significant time counseling clients about procedural options and likely outcomes. Colleagues describe his style as methodical; he prefers clear analysis to flourish in the noise of a case. That orientation reflects his academic background and years of handling contested matters.
At the Barone Defense Firm, Passon contributes to a team that handles defense matters across the state. He brings courtroom experience and institutional knowledge to the firm’s cases and to younger lawyers who consult him on strategy and case management. He has maintained active membership in the State Bar of Arizona throughout his career, staying current with rules and continuing legal education requirements.
Outside the courthouse, Passon’s legal routine includes case preparation that many clients never see: motion practice, evidentiary research and coordination with investigators and experts. He balances those behind-the-scenes duties with courtroom appearances when a matter requires litigation. Those tasks form the backbone of his practice and inform how he advises clients about risk and resolution.
He currently serves as Of Counsel at the Barone Defense Firm, where his practice centers on defense matters.
