About Derek Scott
Derek Scott Fanciullo built a legal career that moves between municipal government and private practice. He studied at New York University School of Law, and early choices in his career reflect an interest in public service and litigation. He later helped start a firm that bears his name and maintained a practice across several jurisdictions.
Fanciullo earned his law degree at NYU Law. The school is known for rigorous academics and a diverse student body, environments that shaped his early legal training. He entered practice equipped for courtroom work and regulatory matters, and he expanded his bar admissions to cover multiple states and a federal circuit.
In 2011 he served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Jersey City Department of Law. That role placed him inside municipal operations, handling legal questions that affect local government. The job involved advising city officials and representing the city in litigation. Time in government gave him familiarity with how public entities manage claims, procure legal advice, and confront disputes that have both legal and political dimensions.
Two years later he took the next step into private practice. In 2013 he became a founding partner of Matsikoudis & Fanciullo LLC. As a founding partner he helped establish the firm’s structure and client services. Practice at a boutique firm setting often requires handling a wide array of matters. He also sustained admissions that allow him to practice in Illinois, New York, and New Jersey, and he is admitted to the D.C. Circuit, which enables him to appear before an important federal appellate tribunal.
Fanciullo’s trajectory shows a mix of public-sector experience and private-practice entrepreneurship. He has navigated courtroom work and municipal advisory roles, and he has worked across state and federal lines. Colleagues and clients have described him as pragmatic in approach, preferring clear legal reasoning and direct advocacy. He continues to practice at Matsikoudis & Fanciullo LLC, where his work involves litigation and counseling for a range of clients. He now concentrates his practice on matters that arise at the intersection of governmental law and civil litigation.
