About Charles
Charles Raether earned his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1987 and completed his J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center in 1997. He arrived at law school after undergraduate studies in Madison and left Georgetown with a professional degree that led him into both private practice and public service. His academic background established a foundation for a career that moves between law firms, nonprofit legal work and government roles.
He began his legal career in private practice. In 1999 he worked as an associate at both Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Hunton & Williams LLP. Those early years were followed by an in-house nonprofit role. In 2001 he served as senior legal counsel at the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law. He then took a position at the U.S. Department of Commerce in 2003, adding government experience to his résumé. In 2007 he shifted into an operational role as Associate Director at Jones Lang LaSalle. Two years later, in 2009, he was named Managing Partner at AmLaw Group. The sequence of roles shows repeated movement between legal practice, organizational leadership and public-sector work.
He is admitted to practice in New York and in Virginia. Since 2010 he has held memberships in the Virginia State Bar Association and the Fairfax County Bar Association. These affiliations reflect ongoing engagement with the bar and with local professional networks. His mix of firm-side and in-house positions, together with time in a federal agency, give him familiarity with the procedural and transactional demands that often arise in cross-jurisdictional matters.
Raether’s career portfolio includes corporate law work from his early firm associations, nonprofit law from his tenure with the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, and real estate and operations experience from his time at Jones Lang LaSalle. He has handled matters that require attention to regulatory settings, organizational governance and commercial transactions. He currently practices law in New York and Virginia, handling corporate, real estate and nonprofit matters in those jurisdictions.
