About Cawanna Anise
Cawanna Anise McMichael took a straight path into law after studying criminal justice as an undergraduate. She earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern University in 2008, then returned to school to complete a J.D. at the University of Georgia in 2015. Those academic years laid the groundwork for early courtroom work and public service.
Her legal training included internships that touched different parts of the criminal justice system. In 2014 she interned with Georgia Capital Defenders. The following year she spent time in the United States Federal Magistrate Court. Those positions preceded an appointment as an assistant public defender in the Augusta Judicial Circuit in 2015, work that introduced her to the daily rhythms of trial practice and client advocacy.
After her time as a public defender, she moved into private practice. In 2018 she joined Swindle Law Group as an associate attorney. A year later she served as a hearing officer for the Housing Authority for the City of Carrollton. Those roles broadened her exposure to administrative hearings, civil matters connected to housing, and continued criminal defense work.
She later founded and became the principal lawyer of CAM LAW - The Law Office of Cawanna A. McMichael. The firm operates in the Carrollton area and reflects a transition into handling a variety of client matters outside the public defender setting. Her office handles litigation and advises clients on legal options in both courtroom and administrative settings.
McMichael’s involvement in professional and community organizations runs alongside her legal work. Since 2020 she has served as president of WHAT NOW, a Carroll County group that addresses diversity and equity issues. She is a member of the Carrollton Dawnbreakers Rotary and has been active in the Carroll County Bar Association, where she has served as secretary since 2018. She also holds membership in the Douglas County Bar Association and previously belonged to the Augusta Bar Association from 2016 to 2018.
Her career shows repeated contact with criminal defense matters, public defense, and administrative hearings. That background informs how she approaches cases today, whether in negotiation or in court. She continues to accept matters in the state of Georgia and to represent clients out of her office in Carrollton.
She currently concentrates her practice on litigation and client representation in state-level matters, addressing criminal and administrative issues on behalf of individuals and local clients.
