About Brent

Brent Cox graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2004 with a B.A. in English. He earned his J.D. from The Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 2008. The path from classroom to courthouse was direct. He moved into a courthouse role soon after law school and remained in the public legal sphere before shifting to private practice.

After law school, Cox served as a law clerk and staff lawyer for the 28th Judicial Circuit in Kentucky in 2008. That experience placed him inside the trial process and exposed him to the work of judges, prosecutors and defense counsel. In 2010 he began practicing at Cox Attorney PLLC. The records also list an office at Cox Lawyer PLLC, where he maintains his practice operations.

Cox is admitted to practice in Kentucky and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His professional training tracks through trial and capital defense instruction. He completed Essentials of Forensic Science for Legal Professionals at West Virginia University in 2013, the Essentials of Defense Investigation for the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy in 2014, and the Trial Practice Institute at the National Criminal Defense College in 2015. He later attended the Capital Defense Institute in 2016 and the Darrow Baldus Death Penalty College’s Capital Case Training in 2017. These courses form the backbone of his courtroom preparation and case strategy.

Across his career Cox has taken on roles that extend beyond casework. He has served as a Director-At-Large for the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2010. He also holds a Barrister position with the Central Kentucky chapter of the American Inns of Court, a role he began in 2013. He has been a member of the Fayette County Bar Association since 2008. Those affiliations reflect steady engagement with the local and statewide legal communities and ongoing professional development.

Cox’s practice draws on courtroom experience, specialized training in forensic and capital case matters, and years of involvement in criminal defense circles. He works from his office at Cox Lawyer PLLC. He practices criminal defense and handles matters arising in Kentucky and appeals that may reach the Sixth Circuit.
