About Bennett James
Bennett James Wills built his path to law through two distinct campuses. He graduated from Belmont University with a B.B.A. in 2007 and went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2011. Those years set the technical foundation he later applied in courtrooms and law offices across two states and at the federal level.
He began his legal career in the Montgomery County court system, serving as a law clerk in 2012. That role put him close to daily courtroom procedure and case management. In 2013 he moved into private practice, holding positions at Peroutka & Peroutka, P.A. and at the Law Offices of Thomas M. Donnelly, LLC. He handled a range of matters in those early years, gaining practical exposure to litigation and client counseling.
By 2015 he had launched his own practice as managing lawyer of Wills Law, LLC. The firm provided a base for him to develop a caseload and to manage the operational side of practice. He joined Meridian Law, PLLC in 2016 and spent a year there before moving to the Law Office of Brian T. Boyd in 2017. His experience across small firms and solo practice sharpened his courtroom skills and taught him the demands of running a practice.
In 2020 he became a partner at Boyd & Wills. That role reflected a longer collaboration with Brian T. Boyd and a move into firm leadership. Wills is admitted to practice in Tennessee and Maryland, and he holds federal admissions in the Fourth and Sixth Circuits. He is a member of the Tennessee State Bar (since 2016) and has held bar membership since 2012 in the other jurisdiction.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic. He favors preparation over surprise and keeps pleadings direct. He has handled matters at trial and on appeal, and his portfolio includes both state and federal work. Day-to-day he balances client contact, brief writing and court appearances. He also manages the administrative duties that come with partnership.
He maintains an office under the Law Office of Boyd & Wills. His practice includes civil litigation and appellate work in both state and federal courts, reflecting his admissions and courtroom experience.
