About Barbra Ilene
Barbra Ilene Black began her academic path at Brandeis University, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1984. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Suffolk University in 1988. Those formative years set a steady pace for a legal career that has spanned state lines and firm hierarchies.
After law school, Black established her professional footing in Massachusetts. She joined Burns & Levinson LLP as an associate in 2001. Five years later she was elevated to partner, a role she has held since 2006. Her time at the firm has been steady and long-term; she has worked within the same firm through significant phases of her career.
Black is licensed in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire and has maintained membership in the Massachusetts State Bar since 1992. She joined the New Hampshire Bar Association in 2010. Those dual jurisdictions shape how she handles matters that cross state borders, and inform the procedural choices she makes on behalf of clients.
Outside of firm duties, Black participates in several professional organizations. She is a current member of the Massachusetts Family and Probate Inns of Court. Since 2017 she has been involved with the National Association of Legal Administrators and its Boston affiliate, Associate of Legal Administrators Boston. These memberships indicate an interest in both practice-area collegiality and the administrative dimensions of running a law office.
She practices from the firm’s Woburn, Massachusetts office. Colleagues and clients see her as a steady presence within Burns & Levinson, where she has navigated both associate and partner roles. Her courtroom and office work has been shaped by decades of local practice and organizational involvement, rather than by brief or transient stints at multiple firms.
Black maintains an active practice across Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and she works regularly on matters tied to family and probate practice areas. Her current work reflects that regional licensure and her long-standing ties to professional groups focused on family and probate law.
