About Ariella

Ariella Hyman is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1992. Her license is currently in active status. Ms. Hyman serves as the Director of Program and Advocacy at Bay Area Legal Aid, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ms. Hyman earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University. She then pursued her Juris Doctor at Harvard Law School, graduating with her J.D. prior to her admission to the California State Bar.

Throughout her legal career, Ms. Hyman has focused on areas such as domestic violence and family law. She has represented clients in matters including adoption, child custody, child support, guardianship, paternity, prenuptial agreements, restraining orders, and same-sex family law issues. Her practice encompasses various stages of legal proceedings, including litigation, negotiations, and trials.

Ms. Hyman has over 33 years of experience in the legal field. She began her tenure at Bay Area Legal Aid in 1992 as a Domestic Violence Staff Attorney in the San Francisco office. In 2001, she became the Managing Attorney of the Alameda County Regional Office, where she supervised a team of 45 attorneys, support staff, and social workers, providing legal services to low-income residents in areas such as domestic violence, family law, housing, economic justice, health access, youth justice, disability rights, immigration, and reentry legal services. In 2018, she transitioned to her current role as Director of Program and Advocacy, overseeing BayLegal's programs across its seven-county service area.

Ms. Hyman is an active member of the California State Bar. She has been recognized for her contributions to the legal community, including being named in "Top 20 lawyers under 40" in California by the Daily Journal in 2002. Additionally, she has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, teaching the Field Placement Workshop and co-instructing the Legal Externship Program at UC Law SF College of the Law.
