About William R. Schmidt
William R. Schmidt III graduated from the University of Maryland - Baltimore with a B.A. in political science. He earned his J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1975. Those early years set the course for a long legal career in Maryland.
After law school, Schmidt entered practice in the state. He built his career steadily and joined LeViness, Tolzman & Hamilton, P.A., where he became a partner in 2000. Colleagues describe him as steady and pragmatic; he has remained at the same firm for many years, navigating changes in the profession and in the courts.
Schmidt has been an active member of the Maryland State Bar. That ongoing membership marks a continuous presence in the state's legal community. Over the decades he has encountered shifting legal trends and adapted his practice to the demands of clients and the rules of the courts.
His educational background in political science and law provided a foundation for courtroom work and client counseling. The combination of a liberal arts undergraduate education and a mid-1970s legal education gave him both context and technical training. He has drawn on that training throughout a career that now spans more than five decades.
People who have worked with him point to his measured approach. He favors clear analysis over flourish. He prepares cases carefully and relies on experience when advising clients. That temperament has fit the steadier rhythms of an established firm and the practical needs of local practice.
Within the firm, Schmidt has taken on matters appropriate to a long-practicing partner. He has mentored junior lawyers and handled client relationships that require continuity. His role as partner since 2000 reflects both seniority and an ongoing role in the firm’s work.
Outside of courtrooms and firm meetings, he has maintained ties to Maryland’s legal institutions through bar membership and professional interaction. He has seen the state bar and the bench evolve and has continued to practice as the legal landscape changed.
Currently he is a partner at LeViness, Tolzman & Hamilton, P.A., practicing in Maryland and continuing to represent clients in matters before state authorities and courts. His current practice concentrates on serving clients in Maryland through his work at the firm.
