About William E. Cannon
William E. Cannon III studied liberal arts before turning to law. He earned a B.A. from Wofford College in 2000 and later graduated from Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law. Those years shaped his approach to legal work: steady, detail-oriented, and attentive to the written record.
After law school he moved into a judicial clerkship. In 2007 he served on the Forsyth County State Court bench, working closely with judges and court staff. That role introduced him to state court procedure and the rhythms of pretrial practice. It also gave him a vantage point on how judges evaluate motion practice and trial preparation.
He entered private practice soon after. In 2009 he joined Orr Brown Johnson, LLP as a lawyer. There he handled client matters in a firm environment and became familiar with the demands of day-to-day litigation and client counseling. The transition from the clerkship to firm practice sharpened his drafting and research skills and deepened his practical courtroom experience.
Over time his work expanded to include a range of case tasks. He has prepared pleadings, managed discovery, written briefs, and handled hearings. He has learned to balance the paperwork of modern litigation with the deadlines and strategy of contested matters. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and direct in courtroom presentation.
Cannon later brought that mix of courtroom familiarity and firm practice to a smaller firm setting. He is now part of Cannon, Mihill & Winkles, LLC. The move allowed him to take on more responsibility for client relationships and case strategy while staying engaged in litigation practice. In that setting he continues to rely on the courtroom perspective he developed as a clerk and the procedural experience he gained at Orr Brown Johnson.
Outside of casework he has maintained ties to the legal community through professional contacts developed over years in Georgia’s courts. He keeps current on procedural developments and treats client communication as a central part of his role. He combines a background in both judicial service and private practice to handle matters that require careful procedural handling and courtroom readiness.
He currently practices at Cannon, Mihill & Winkles, LLC, where his work centers on state-court litigation and related procedural matters.
