About W. Charlton

W. Charlton Allen took an unconventional path into the law. Before donning a robe of legal argument, he stood on stages as an opera singer. That early career choice left a mark: Allen learned to project, to marshal a presence and to read an audience. Those are useful skills in court.

He earned his J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law, where he studied litigation. The law school years set the technical groundwork for a practice that would span tax court, federal district court and appellate work. Allen's legal education emphasized trial skills, evidence and procedure, all of which informed the cases he later handled.

Allen’s professional record shows variety. In 1977 he worked as a self-employed opera singer. Later he moved into law and, in 1995, became a senior attorney at Charlton Allen & Associates, P.C. Over the years he has appeared before the U.S. Tax Court and litigated in the Northern District of Georgia. He is also admitted to practice in Georgia and before the 11th Circuit. Those admissions reflect a practice that crosses administrative, trial and appellate forums.

His courtroom work tends toward contested tax matters and related litigation. He has handled procedural hearings, discovery disputes and trial preparation, and he has briefed appellate issues. He combines courtroom experience with familiarity of federal tax procedures, drawing on credentials that enable him to represent clients in both district court and the Tax Court.

Outside the courtroom Allen has steered organizations. He founded MTA and has served as its general manager since 2000. That role has required organizational oversight and long-term planning. It complements his legal work by keeping him connected to administrative leadership and management responsibilities.

Colleagues describe Allen as deliberate and pragmatic. He favors clear argument over theatricality, even though he once sang on stage for paying audiences. His practice combines trial-level representation and appellate briefing, and he brings that blend to the matters he accepts. He maintains an active presence in federal and state forums and handles disputes that arise at the intersection of tax law and civil litigation. His current practice concentrates on tax controversies, litigation in the Northern District of Georgia and appellate matters in the 11th Circuit.
