About V. James
V. James Filliben earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2009 after completing undergraduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, where he finished programs in finance and American studies in 2006. He entered the legal profession armed with both a business and liberal arts background. That combination shaped the early direction of his practice and informs how he approaches client matters.
He began his career in private practice in 2009 as an associate at The Law Offices of J. Darren Byers, P.A. He moved to Dummit Fradin in 2012, continuing litigation and client counseling work. In 2015 he joined SeiferFlatow, PLLC as a partner in the family law group. Over the years he has also secured admissions to practice before the United States District Courts for the Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina, in addition to state licensure in North Carolina.
His work spans family law and criminal defense. As a partner in a family law practice, he handles matters that arise when relationships and finances intersect. He also maintains a presence in criminal defense circles, belonging to organizations that concentrate on trial work and criminal advocacy. Those dual strands—family and criminal—reflect the range of courtroom and negotiation work he has handled throughout his career.
Filliben is an active member of several professional groups. He holds memberships in the National Trial Lawyers Association and the Criminal Defense Section of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. He belongs to the Mecklenburg County Bar Association and the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers Association. These affiliations keep him engaged with trial practice updates and local bar developments.
Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who blends courtroom preparation with client-facing communication. He has experience managing contested hearings and settlement discussions in both state and federal settings. Since joining SeiferFlatow in 2015 he has continued to represent clients in family law matters and in criminal cases across North Carolina and in the federal district courts where he is admitted, balancing litigation and negotiated resolutions in his current practice focus.
